Week 6
What did you do this past week?
This past week we finished phase 1 of the project since it was due on Wednesday at 10pm. It was difficult to finish because many of the members on our team don’t have that much experience with web development. We STRUGGLED with connecting the Gitlab API and went to office hours so often with Adam and Larry. We also started phase 2, looking up how to dockerize our frontend and backend, learning javascript/typescript, and figuring out which side we were going to be working on. Frontend it is for me ehee
What’s in your way?
The learning curve, interviews, stress, sleep. The whole shazam.
Like I mentioned before, I don’t have much experience with Frontend web development in Typescript and React. I do have experience with Android development, so that should come in handy when learning javascript and web design.
Secondly, Stress. Interviews… I hate recruiting season because of how high pressure it is. I have white hairs now. WHITE HAIRS. Sleep… my eyebags. I got blue light filter glasses to reduce the migraines I get from looking at my computer for so long.
What will you do next week?
Exams, interviews, learning, the normal. I have to learn JavaScript and continue working on Phase 2 with my team :)
If you read it, what did you think of Why Is Silicon Valley So Awful to Women?
I’m glad Professor Downing had us read this article. To be honest, I became so angry while reading this. I was heated yall. I literally had to take a break halfway because it was unfortunately too relatable to the experiences I’ve faced here in college. Don’t get me wrong, I love being in computer science and tech. There are just so many times where I’ve felt objectified (even in the lab! Offering me a massage and proceeding to massage even after I said no!?) or when someone would automatically ask my male counterpart to verify what I was saying. Of course, some of these actions aren’t intentional and come from ignorance, but they do make the workplace uncomfortable and scary (to an extent) to be in.
In conclusion, please pleaase say something or do something when we ask for help. Support the women you know because sometimes we may not be able to handle the situation on our own.
What was your experience of iterators, reduce(), and tuple?
Since I’m not too familiar with Python, I still get confused about what is exactly being copied and modified. So with iterators and tuples, I have to familiarize/study the concept a little more.
What’s it like working in a group?
I enjoy working with them! We are responsible and get what we need to done on time. It also removes the pressure of figuring out something alone, which I particularly enjoy.
What was your experience of the team contract?
I’m familiar with all the girls on my team, so the contract wasn’t too hard. We decided to punish any breach of contract with death by fire and public shame.
What was your experience of the peer review?
We all work very well together, so I didn’t have much to put on the peer review.
What made you happy this week?
I got Jollibee! Iykyk. Jollibee is a famous fast food restaurant in the Phillippines that sells fried chicken and gravy, spaghetti, and mango peach pies, among other things. BUT IT’S SO GOOD (well, I think the nostalgia is what makes it good) Tis also a very big part of Filipino culture/memes
What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?
Drink some water and go get some sleep! Even if something is stressing you out, you need to take a break to continue doing the things you need to do. If you have 10 minutes in your day to spare (which you probably do if you be lookin at your phone and scrolling) then use that time to drink a cup of water and take a 5 minute nap. Then continue what you were doing!
