CS373 Fall 2020: Lauren Mangibin

Oh this photo again I —

Week 1

Hello, blog!! I’m back :)

For those of you who didn’t get the spiel last time. Bonjour! My name is Lauren Mangibin and I am a junior studying CS and business like many of you are. I moved six times around the country as a kid, but I guess you could say I’m from Austin, TX.

I went to LASA High School in Austin and I played lacrosse and the violin and the piano and the guitar, but I forgot how to do all of that since I came to college (*sigh oh well*). Since then I’ve been growing more towards dance. I choreograph and teach for Redefined Dance Company and UT Barkada.

I came to UT because it was B I G. Compared to the other schools I got into ~back in the day~, I thought UT had the most opportunities for me, and I turned out to be right. I’m the Social Chair this year for WiCS, a Pod mentor, choreographer and dancer for one of UT’s largest dance orgs, and the number of people I’ve made connections with is astounding.

To be honest, however, I don’t really have a reason as to why I chose to major in computer science. I just thought it was fun at the time, so I said ‘Why not’, and kept going. I know that I’m interested in Software Engineering, which is why I took this class in the first place. I don’t have much experience with Javascript, Python, or Web programming, so I thought this class could challenge me to learn these technologies.

So far the class has been great! I love listening to Downing lecture, and time goes by quickly when I’m in his class. Cold calling doesn’t scare me as much anymore, but I still get nervous whenever he’s about to pick someone.

This week, I’m happy because I was productive! I can’t go out because of ~el corona v i r u s~ so I’m glad I can spend time doing my work seeing as recruiting season is upon us.

TIP OF THE WEEK: Smile for 15 seconds. Do it right now. Increase your endorphins! BUILD THAT DOPAMINE.
